Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with John Salton, a 63-year-old vegan ultra-runner from Bright, Australia. I took up running 10 years ago, and now, at 63 years old, I'm an ultra-runner. I start being more intentional about the way I breathe, the water I'm drinking, and the food I'm eating. When I'm running in the mountains, it feels like a meditation. I look for a really good miso that's been fermented for several years.

An astrological concept, a Saturn return is considered a time of great upheaval — “growing older, burning out at work, increasingly higher bills, a couple of monumental life milestones,” as the astrologer Aliza Kelly has put it. As someone who is nearing the end of his return, I’ve never felt more upheaved by the colossal changes I’ve experienced from my late 20s to my early 30s, including but not limited to: new job, new apartment, new boyfriend. One thing I’ve started to do that gets me a little closer to settling into this new beginning — my 30s — is eating Japanese breakfast. The eclectic spread, called ichiju-sansai (“one soup, three dishes”), is beyond just a savory meal that soothes both soul and stomach lining first thing in the morning. An array of pickles pulled from the refrigerator — cucumbers, plums, radishes and whatever is in my house kimchi jar at the time — completes the meal.

Secrets of a Danish Castle

My first conscious memory occurred on the lower landing of a staircase that spiraled up four floors of the 14th-century, moat-encircled Gjorslev castle in Denmark. And now, five decades later, I’m standing on the same spot, this time with a statuesque Danish woman in stylish Japanese casual wear. “This is roasted and steamed tea from Korea,” Mette Marie Kjaer tells me, offering a pleasant cup of miso-tinged brew. Ms. Kjaer runs her Asian tea company, Sing Tehus, from a rented wing of the castle, offering tea ceremonies and yoga retreats while maintaining Gjorslev’s status as the oldest continuously inhabited building in Scandinavia. After half a century of benign neglect following my grandfather’s departure, the castle is hosting not just yoga and tea events, but arts festivals, medieval fairs and even a summer musical theater in its courtyard.

TOKYO (AP) — Health supplement products believed to have caused two deaths and sickened more than 100 people have been ordered to be taken off store shelves in Japan. The products from Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co., billed as helping to lower cholesterol, contained an ingredient called “benikoji,” a red species of mold. The ministry has put up a list on its official site of all the recalled products, including some that use benikoji for food coloring. The recalled products could be bought without a prescription from a doctor, and could be purchased at drug stores. The ministry official warned there could be more victims in the days ahead.

We asked dermatologists whether Eto's skincare routine or just luck and genetics have helped her achieve flawless skin. AdvertisementEto has had a skincare routine for 60 yearsEto has followed a daily skincare routine for the last 60 years, using specific products from a Japanese brand, Manavis, for the past 15 years. Alster said that Eto's skincare routine has likely "minimally" contributed to her wrinkle-free skin, and having so many steps is unnecessary. Plus, Vitamin C helps protect the skin against the sun and has been linked to decreases in wrinkles, according to Oregon State University. Plus, research suggests that gut health and skin health are interconnected.

This is how collard greens have always been prepared in my family, often picked by my grandfather from his garden after carefully considering each bunch. There are few items as closely associated with a singular cuisine as collard greens are with the cuisine of Black Americans. Chef and cookbook author Adrienne Cheatham shows how to make a delicious salad using collard greens. With this wealth of health-supporting benefits, it’s a wonder collard greens don’t show up on the table more often, and in more ways. It wasn’t that long ago that kale was also relegated to preparations similar to traditional collard greens.

Even Whistler Blackcomb ski resort was only a two-hour drive from home — where the diverse terrain and charming village are world-famous and Winter Olympics-worthy for good reason. The ride in a private taxi to Niseko, Hokkaido took around two hours. Here are five reasons Niseko offered a better experience than Whistler, but why I would still choose the North American ski resort over the Japanese ski destination. Even if the snow in Whistler isn't as consistent, it surpasses the Japanese ski town for many reasons. We will probably make our way back to a different ski resort in Japan while living in Asia.

Salad kits take a little bit of the stress out of dinner. Bunny McFaddenPrepping the perfect crisp salad after a long day of activities takes brain power that I frankly don't have. Trader Joe's kit has a handful of crunchy elements and an earthy, tangy dressing. I'm a busy mom, so I love that I can turn this into an entire meal by pairing it with pan-fried salmon or tofu. Plus, I can save dishes if I prep it in the bag.

In its 2023-24 winter outlook, the regulatory authority warned that prolonged, wide-area cold snaps threaten the reliability of bulk power generation and availability of fuel supplies for natural gas-fired generation. "Recent extreme cold weather events have shown that energy delivery disruptions can have devastating consequences for electric and gas consumers in impacted areas," NERC said. It put the U.S. Midwest, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and South, along with some Canadian provinces, at the highest risk for electricity supply shortages this winter. NERC also found that load forecasting in winter is growing in complexity, and underestimating demand is a risk to reliability in extreme cold temperatures. Flows of gas into pipelines were reduced during Elliott, while demand for the fuel for heating and power generation increased, dramatically lowering line pressures.

Shokuiku encourages parents and schools to teach kids where their food comes from and how it affects our mind and body. This concept has been an integral part of Japan's culture, and it's a big reason why we're home to some of the world's healthiest children. As a mother raising a young daughter in Japan, here's what Japanese parents do differently to raise happy and adventurous eaters:1. Some preschools have kids harvest vegetables to eat for lunch, while in elementary schools, they learn about the farms that produce vegetables, fish and other foods. While many preschools also provide lunches, homemade bento lunches can play an important role in promoting shokuiku.

REUTERS/Nick Oxford/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLITTLETON, Colorado, Sept 8 (Reuters) - After months of low wind speeds in several key wind farm areas, U.S. wind power generation hit its highest levels in nearly five months in early September as wind speeds picked up. The remaining states recorded an average wind generation drop of 7.1%, which contributed to a 3.1% decline in total national wind generation in the January to May period. The shortfalls in wind power have been evident in the output data of major U.S. power pool markets. Reuters Image Acquire Licensing RightsAs these markets cover over 30 U.S. states as well as the areas with the largest concentrations in wind power generation in the United States, the declines in wind power in these power pools had a direct impact on national level wind output, with knock-on effects for power generation mixes across the country. Similarly, any sustained recoveries in wind power generation totals from these key areas will lead to a commensurate rebound in U.S. power generation totals, and may allow for utilities to pare back use of natural gas and other sources of power to make way for more non-emitting wind power supplies.

REUTERS/Adrees Latif/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 24 (Reuters) - Two U.S. electric grids issued alerts warning of the potential for power shortages on Thursday due to a brutal heat wave blanketing Texas and U.S. Central states. ERCOT faces "a high potential to enter emergency operations this evening" due to low wind generation and high power demand, the grid operator said. AccuWeather forecast temperatures in Houston, the biggest city in Texas, would reach 107 degrees Fahrenheit (41.7 degrees Celsius) on Thursday. MISO projected power use would reach 127,195 MW on Thursday, topping the system's all-time high of 127,100 MW in July 2011.

A man with American Electric Power (AEP) repairs an electricity cable during a heatwave in Eagle Pass, Texas, U.S. July 28, 2023. Power grids carry reserves to ensure the system remains reliable in case a large power plant or transmission line fails unexpectedly. ERCOT forecast demand would reach 85,296 megawatts (MW) on Thursday, just shy of its 85,435 MW record set Aug. 10. MISO projected it would have 125,907 MW of supplies available with 120,656 MW from internal resources and 5,251 MW of imports. That would not be enough to meet the grid's forecast peak of 127,692 MW, which would top the system's all-time high of 127,100 MW in July 2011.

Total power generation across the lower 48 states through Aug. 20, 2023 declined by 2.1% from the same period in 2022, data compiled by Refinitiv shows. All major U.S. power markets increased electricity generation from natural gas in Jan-Aug 2023 from the same period in 2022, and cut generation from coal. Output from clean power sources, including renewables and hydro, increased by 12%, despite drops in output from biomass and wind power sources, and a decline in imports from neighbouring states. Clean power sources accounted for a 57.4% share of the CAISO generation mix, up from 50.7% in January through Aug. 20 in 2022. THE NORTHWEST & THE RESTThe Pacific Northwest of the United States had the steepest decline in clean power generation of all the major power markets in the country.

Avocado prep is one of Chipotle employees' least favorite responsibilities, Curt Garner, Chief Customer and Technology Officer at Chipotle, told CNBC. Chipotle's robot could also help alleviate lingering labor shortages that have swept across the restaurant industry. Last year Chipotle started testing the chip-making robot Chippy, which was intentionally designed to make imperfect tortilla chips. To develop the Autocado robot, Chipotle worked with Vebu Labs, a food industry robotics startup. Future investments could include farming and supply chain innovations, as well as advanced robotics, Chipotle said in a press release.

The recipe is in his book “ The Blue Zones American Kitchen: 100 Recipes to Live to 100 ." “If you want to avoid gas, the way to start with beans is with a couple tablespoons a day,” Buettner said. For quicker soup, Buettner suggests using a pressure cooker for 25 minutes — except for lentils, which only take about 5 minutes. “If you want to store it more than 2 days, it’s better to freeze it.”This recipe is adapted from “The Blue Zones American Kitchen: 100 Recipes to Live to 100” by Dan Buettner.

From drive-thru to back-of-house operations to predictive ordering for consumers, restaurant brands are starting to pilot artificial intelligence to streamline food service. McDonald's , for its part, sold McD Tech Labs to IBM in 2021, entering a strategic partnership to help bring AI technology to drive-thru lanes. McD Tech Labs, which was formerly known as Apprente before McDonald's acquired it, used AI to understand drive-thru orders. Del Taco is also using voice-activated AI for orders at its drive-thru, as is Wingstop for orders placed by phone. Robots and automation are becoming a bigger part of restaurants from Wendy's to Chili's. According to documents obtained by the Post, the startup, called Kernel, uses a model featuring three human workers directing robots along an assembly line. Spokesperson Sarah Rosenberg confirmed to the Post that Ells is at the startup's helm and elements of its plan. Ells grew Chipotle and helped popularize fast casual dining before stepping down as CEO in 2017 after various foodborne illness outbreaks at its restaurants. Ells is far from the first to propose using robots and other technologies in restaurants to automate various procedures and rely on fewer workers.
U.S. Midwest grid operator flags urgent need for market reforms

The reforms are needed "to maintain reliability and send the right pricing signals to the market," said Clair Moeller, president and CEO at Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). For the zone which covers most of Louisiana and southeast Texas, the clearing prices for fall and winter were $59/MW-day and $19/MW-day, respectively. Market participants who postpone the retirement of resources and import additional capacity this year may not be able to repeat those measures in the future, said Moeller. "We continue to see uncertainty and volatility in the auction results year-over-year, and managing the system in real-time is becoming more challenging," Moeller added.
